Stucco Repair in Jacksonville
Stucco Repair Task List
It is crucial to know that repairing your stucco requires three coats, which require different mixtures.
Materials for the First Coat
• 1 shovel of hydrated lime
• 6 shovels of brick or mason's sound
• ½ bag of Portland cement
• ½ cup of acrylic bonding agent
Materials for Second and Third Coats
• 1 shovel of hydrated lime
• 8 shovels of aggregate sand for concrete
• ½ bag of Portland cement
• ½ cup of acrylic bonding agent
Direction
1. Mix and blend dry materials in a wheelbarrow using a mortar how.
2. Add the acrylic bonding agent and add water in small quantities as you mix the entire materials.
3. Avoid adding more water than necessary to avoid making the mixture too loose to be workable
4. Ensure to complete the repairs in less than 90 minutes when the mixture will begin to harden.
Step 2: Prepare the Work Area
Use a hammer and a cold chisel to break off loose stucco without applying excessive force to avoid damaging the underlying wood lath supports. However, wear eye protection. Break away the loose stucco from the edges until you get to where stucco adhered to the lath. Look for any damage and repair rotten wood.
Step 3: Cover the Exposed Lath
Use and apply a grade-D builder's paper to cover the wood lath. Ensure that no area is exposed.
Step 4: Add Mesh
Add galvanized metal lath to the wall, over the paper, and trim it according to the stucco's shape and edges.
Step 5: Mix the Stucco
Follow the instructions provided in Step 1 until you have the right mix of stucco to apply to the wall. However, wet the edge of the stucco to allow the mixture to stick to the lath. This will help with water proofing.
Step 6: Apply the Mix
The next step is to sling the mix to the wall. Add more stucco to the wall until it is about half an inch thick.
Step 7: Scratch the Surface
When the applied stucco has lost its wet sheen, scratch the surface to enable the next coat to bond adequately to it. Meanwhile, do not let it dry completely before applying the secured coat.
Step 8: Apply the Second and Third Coats
Add the second coat and let it wet sheen dry before applying the third coat. You should follow the right procedure to match the existing finish.
Leave the stucco for at least one week to dry and cure before painting the repaired surface and the rest of the wall. If this is not an option, use a masonry conditioner such as Loxon from Sherwin Williams to help balance the Ph.
