Paint Custom Designs

Certain designs such as the checker board and diamond shaped designs have become a common motif on interior walls of risky adventurers. These designs are a unique modern style that can be implemented to liven up a space and create intrigue in almost any room. Pro Color Painting offers these custom designs and many more.

Consider Your Colors and Tools

For this example we will use two contrasting, but coordinated colors. We will use one color for a base color and the contrasting color for the cubes or diamonds. Keeping it simple with just two colors will give a better effect; especially if it’s your first attempt.

Several items will be needed; including paint, brushes/rollers, Frog tape, a T-square or straight edge ruler and level. In addition, an erasable pencil and chalk will come in handy to mark the layout. Most professional painters use chalk.
Interior Faux Painting
The first order of business is to prep the walls before painting. We will want to fill nail holes, patch any sheetrock imperfections, and clean the surfaces. Next will be to paint the base coat. Use primer if needed; especially over any patches to avoid flashing or dry spots. Be sure to let the primer dry before painting.

Usually, a coat of paint takes about 4-6 hours to dry properly and several days to fully cure. For most interior walls, it takes two coats, primer and paint, so keep that in mind when you want to carry out a task like this in your home. A painting company may use fans or heaters to help speed up the drying of the paint. The base coat is usually the lighter of the two colors that you have chosen, although this is not always the case.

Determine the Pattern Size

Next, you will need to decide the size of the diamonds for your design. Generally, the height of the diamond should be double the width. Sanding the wall with a sanding pole prior to painting will enhance your finished product. Then you should be ready to commence painting the walls with the base color for the wall.

Once you’re convinced the base coat is thoroughly dry, it’s time to draw the layout. Start with vertical lines down the wall which will be spaced according to the width of the squares or diamonds. Making a straight line from top to bottom, each line spaced equal to the same width of the diamond.

Once completed, you are ready for horizontal lines. With the same spacing concept; these will be drawn across the full length of the wall. Separate the horizontal lines the same as the height of the squares or diamonds. Step back and you should see a special design of a rectangular grid across the entire wall.

For diamonds: Measure the rectangles and mark the center of each side. This will allow you to draw lines between the dots; making diamond shapes. Caution; don’t make the lines too dark we will be removing them later. Chalk may be best at this stage; as it is definitely the easiest to erase. Now the diamonds can be outlined with the Frog tape.

With your mini roller, paint the diamonds. After painting 1-2 coats dislodge the tape and look for any touch ups needed. Allowing the paint to thoroughly dry before attempting to remove the remaining lines.

For squares: You will use the identical method above with the exception of marking the center of the squares and drawing the additional lines. The original grid pattern will work fine for applying the square pattern.
